About Qanu

Qanu works to improve the quality of education, research, professional training, strategy and policy in higher education and professional organisations. We support evaluations and accreditations, and give tailor-made training and advice on quality assurance, programme improvement and peer review.

Our activities

Qanu’s professionals have detailed and up-to-date knowledge of the major (international) trends and collaborate in quality assurance processes and systems, in particular in a European context. Qanu is in contact with all major alliances of the European Universities and regularly shares its experiences and knowledge at international conferences. Furthermore, Qanu is increasingly involved in consultancy for professional organisations and educational bodies, through which we provide innovative and flexible quality assurance solutions and policy improvement.

A reliable partner

Qanu is a ‘not for profit’ organisation. We have over fifteen year of experience with quality assurance and review processes of higher education and policy in the Netherlands and internationally, and benefit from an extensive network of professionals in education. Qanu is a full member of the European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA) and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE). Qanu is listed on the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR).

    Marijn Hollestelle

    Marijn Hollestelle is involved in various educational assessments, including Biomedical Technology, Engineering and the Physics and Astronomy cluster. He studied Physics and History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Utrecht and was awarded his doctorate in 2011 from the University of Leiden for his biography of the physicist Paul Ehrenfest. He subsequently worked as a researcher at the Stichting Historie der Techniek [History of Technology Foundation] at the Technical University of Eindhoven. After conducting a study for the Rathenau Institute, he worked for six years as policy officer at NWO, in the Exact and Natural Sciences domain.

    Els Schröder

    Els Schröder supervises as project manager educational and research assessments, preferably with an international and/or interdisciplinary character. She currently is in charge of the research review of the interfaculty Research Institute for Culture, Cognition, History and Heritage of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and is in the lead for the assessments of the research master programmes in Classics, Archaeology and Region Studies. Els read History at Utrecht University and completed her doctorate in Medieval Studies at the University of York in 2012. Prior to coming to QANU, she worked as researcher and policy officer for the Nexus Institute and as editor for academic publishing house Brepols in Belgium.

    Assistant consultant

    Valérie Drost supports the project leaders and as part of this role is involved in the preparation of educational assessments. Valérie studied at the University of Maastricht, obtaining a BSc and MSc in health science and a MSc in health psychology. After graduation she worked as a researcher and project coordinator at EDLAB, the institute for educational innovation of the University of Maastricht.

    Petra van den Hoorn

    Petra van den Hoorn is currently involved in the educational assessments in the Biomedical Technology and Art & Culture clusters. She studied Work, Organisational and Personnel Psychology at the University of Groningen. Before she started working at QANU, she was a researcher and project coordinator in the teacher training section of the University of Groningen. In this position, she was responsible for the data collection from thousands of novice teachers in secondary education in the Netherlands. She also worked on various research questions concerning the professional development of starters in education.

    Marcella van Schie is the coordinator of the project supporters. She studied History and Public History at the Vrije University and the University of Amsterdam. After graduation, she worked as an assistant project manager and then project manager at a translation agency, as tour guide for SRC Cultuurvakanties and as Trainee Information Advisor at various employers.

    Anna Sparreboom

    Anna Sparreboom is the first point of contact for research evaluations. Along with her tasks as coordinator, she acts as project leader to supervise both research and educational assessments. She is currently coordinating the educational assessments of Modern Language and Literature and Humanistic Studies. Anna previously worked as a lecturer and PhD student of Ancient History at the University of Amsterdam.

    Fiona Schouten

    Fiona Schouten has experience with educational assessments in large and very large clusters, the assessment of research masters, revision assessments and the special category of internationalisation (CeQuInt). Fiona is currently coordinating the educational assessments of Jurisprudence, Criminology, and Art and Culture. She is a member of the examination committee of the Pabo at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences as an external member. She studied Language and Culture Studies at the University of Utrecht and was awarded her doctorate in Spanish literature from Radboud University in Nijmegen. Before coming to QANU she worked as a policy officer, editor and researcher at the Nexus Institute in Tilburg.

    Odin Dekkers
    Managing Director

    Odin Dekkers has extensive experience in Dutch and international higher education. From 2001 to 2019 he was professor of English Literature at Radboud University and filled a large number of varied functions in education and research from that position, both national and international. Over the years, his focus has shifted more to management and administration, e.g. as educational director at RU and chair of different committees and boards.

    Peter Hildering

    Peter Hildering supervises primarily assessments of technical, exact and natural science programmes and research programmes on behalf of QANU. He is supervising e.g. the educational assessments for Physics and Astronomy, Informatics, Engineering, Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine, and the research assessment of the quantum institute QuTech. Peter studied Engineering Physics at the University of Twente and Physics and Astronomy at Radboud University, majoring in science communication. He has worked as a freelance science journalist for various periodicals and as a communication manager at the NOW research institute Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI; mathematics and informatics centre) in Amsterdam.

    Victor van Kleef puts assessment panels together and is involved in the organisational preparation of assessments and their administrative completion. After obtaining a bachelor in History from Leiden University, he completed the prestigious master’s programme European History & Civilisation at the University of Leiden, Université Paris 1 – Panthéon/Sorbonne and Oxford University. Victor previously worked at the Humanities Faculty of the University of Leiden and as a research consultant and conference organiser in Brussels.
